Hyperlinks

Hyperlinks can be used to link users visiting the website from one page to another page of information. This allows the administrator to save time and also make things easier for users to access information. There are a couple of ways that the hyperlink can be created; to an external (3rd party) website, to an internal page, to a document (PDF, WORD, EXCEL), to an email address and to an anchor (jumping to a different section within a page). The Hyperlink can be the result of clicking on some text on the page or even an image (i.e. Facebook icon).

Topics

Creating a Text Hyperlink

Most hyperlinks that are found on the website are text hyperlinks. This allows someone visiting your website to click a word, sentence, or even a paragraph and it will link them to some other content (a different website, within the same website, within the same page, another document, or an email address).

Here are the steps to create a text hyperlink:
1. Type text in the content editor
2. Highlight some or all of the text to be hyperlinked
  • this could be as simple as one or two words
  • or it could be an entire sentence
3. Click on the INSERT/EDIT LINK icon that looks like a chain link

4. The Insert link Modal window will appear, determine which of the 5 types of hyperlinks to be used (see instructions for each type below)

  • Web - External - link to an outside source that is not part of the club website (i.e. www.weather.com, www.pga.com, www.google.com)
  • Content - Internal - link to another page on website that has already been completed (i.e. Golf, Events, Dining)
  • Media libraries - Document - link to something that was saved in a different file format (i.e. EventPoster.pdf, TournamentResults.xlsx, Policies.docx)
  • E-mail - link to a club email address, options to add cc, bcc recipients, pre-populate Subject line, enter text in the message area
  • Anchor - link to a specific section of the website on the same page (i.e. click here to go to top of page)

Creating an Image Hyperlink

Instead of clicking on text on a page to link to another content, someone visiting your website can click on an image and it will link them to some other content (i.e. a different website, within same website, within same page, another document, or an email address)

Here are the steps to create an image hyperlink:

1. INSERT/EDIT IMAGE or MEDIA - for additional instructions on how to insert an image click here

2. Click on image to select it (i.e. Facebook image) - once selected, it should have the 8 square nodes surrounding it

  • Anchor - link to a specific section of the website on the same page (i.e. click here to go to the top of the page)

Web - Hyperlink to an External Site

The WEB option will create hyperlinks that will link to an outside source that is not part of the club website (i.e. www.weather.com, www.pga.com, www.google.com).

First determine whether you want to create a Text Hyperlink or Image Hyperlink by following the instructions above.
1. Click on WEB across the top
2. Type or paste the address in the URL field box

3. Optional step - decide if the linked page should open in its own window or a new window - see more info on Target
  • For external hyperlinks it is recommended that the Target be changed to New window (_blank)
  • Click on TARGET Tab
  • Select New window (_blank) from the dropdown menu
4. Click SAVE & CLOSE
  • The highlighted text will now be a link (default blue color and underline) to the external website specified within the link
  • Save the changes and click on PREVIEW to test the hyperlink (it cannot be tested in Edit mode)

Example of a hyperlink to an external site.
Click here to see the Weather.

Content - Hyperlink to an Internal Page

The CONTENT option will create hyperlinks that will link to another page on your website (i.e. Golf, Events, Dining). Instead of having to add the same content to the current page or instruct visitors to your website to look for the page using the navigation at the top of your website, the CONTENT hyperlink will take them to that page directly.

First determine whether you want to create a Text Hyperlink or Image Hyperlink by following the instructions above.
1. Click on CONTENT across the top (this will open up the Content Tree for the website)
2. Select the page to link it to (this could be a page on any level on the website, Parent Page, Child Page ...)
  • Protocol: (other) should already be selected -  do not change
  • The URL: will automatically populate with the file path that the page selected is located
3. Optional step - decide if the linked page should open in its own window or a new window - see more info on Target
  • Usually for Internal page links the Target remains as (not set) since it is part of your clubs website
4. Click SAVE & CLOSE
  • The highlighted text will now be a link (default blue color and underline) to the internal page specified within the link
  • Save the changes and click on PREVIEW to test the hyperlink (it cannot be tested in Edit mode)

Example of what a hyperlink to an internal page on the website would look like.

For more details, visit our Golf Page
Note: this is just an example of what the link would look like, this support site doesn't actually have a Golf page so it isn't going to take you to the Golf Page. The text "visit our Golf Page" was manually adjusted to look like a hyperlink by using a blue font color and applying the underline. Clicking on it will not take you to a Golf Page.

Media Libraries - Hyperlink to Documents

The MEDIA LIBRARIES option will create hyperlinks that will link to documents that have been uploaded into the Media Libraries section of your website. Usually, we recommend the files to be in PDF but it can also link to other file types (i.e. EventPoster.pdf, TournamentResults.xlsx, Policies.docx).
TIP: For clubs that have documents in PDF format such as a weekly/monthly newsletter or dining menu that changes often, there's a special Page Type called NEWSLETTER that can be added as a new page. This allows the monthly newsletter to open immediately once the user selects the page from the navigation, rather than waiting for a page to load up and then clicking on the media libraries hyperlink that would have been created to open up the newsletter. For more info, visit the Newsletter section.

First determine whether you want to create a Text Hyperlink or Image Hyperlink by following the instructions above.
1. Click on the INSERT/EDIT LINK icon that looks like a chain link
2. Click on MEDIA LIBRARIES across the top. This will open up the Media Library (online storage area for any documents that have been uploaded to be used on the website)
3. Click on the correct Library (most clubs will only have the one called Site Media some have Private/Member Media)
4. Navigate to the folder containing the file by clicking on the folder name
5. From the box on the right, select file to be linked
  • If the file is not in the Media Library, click on the UPLOAD button, then locate and upload the file from your computer
  • Protocol: http:// (do not change)
  • The URL: will automatically populate with the file path that the document selected is located

6. Optional step - decide if the linked page should open in its own window or a new window - see more info on Target
  • For hyperlinks to a document, it is recommended that the Target be changed to New window (_blank)
  • Click on TARGET Tab
  • Select New window (_blank) from the dropdown menu
7. Click SAVE & CLOSE
  • The highlighted text will now be a link (default blue color and underline) to the document specified
  • Save the changes and click on PREVIEW to test the hyperlink (it cannot be tested in Edit mode)

Email - Link to an Email address

The EMAIL option will create hyperlinks that will link to a club email address with options to add cc (carbon copy recipient), bcc (blind carbon copy recipient), pre-populate Subject line and enter text in the message area. So instead of getting emails from your members without subject lines, by using the email hyperlink option you can pre-set the Subject line for them when they click on the link from a designated page.

First determine whether you want to create a Text Hyperlink or Image Hyperlink by following the instructions above.
1. Click on E-MAIL across the top
  • There will be 5 fields that can be populated
  • The only field that has to be filled in is the To: field, the remaining 4 fields are optional
  • To: at the very least, this should be populated with an email address (i.e. [email protected])
  • Cc: this is the Carbon Copy field. Does someone else at the club want a copy of this inquiry? (i.e. [email protected])
  • Bcc: this is the Blind Carbon Copy field. Does someone else need a copy of this inquiry? (i.e. [email protected])
  • Subject: opportunity to pre-populate the subject line (i.e. Banquet Inquiry from Events page on website)
  • Message body: opportunity to obtain additional information from inquiries (i.e. Will you be attending the event?)
Click SAVE & CLOSE
  • The highlighted text will now be a link (default blue color and underline) to the email address specified within the link
  • Save the changes and click on PREVIEW to test the hyperlink (it cannot be tested in Edit mode)
Note: When the email link is clicked, the users default email program will launch and any information inputted in the above fields will now automatically populate in the email message.

For banquet inquiries, please contact [email protected]

This is what it will look like in Outlook when someone clicks on the Email hyperlink [email protected]

Anchor - Link to another section on the same page

The ANCHOR option will create hyperlinks that will link to a specific section of the website on the same page (i.e. click here to go to the top of the page, click here to see more info on pricing).
An anchor is used on pages that have multiple pages of content which normally would require scrolling down to read all the content. The anchor will allow the user to jump to a specific section of the page instead of having to scroll down to specific section.

There are two parts to creating an Anchor type hyperlink
1. Determine and set where the ANCHOR is on the page (i.e. Top, Middle, Bottom, specific section such as History or Pricing). The link will take the users to on the same page (Anchor point).
2. Create the hyperlink by clicking on the hyperlink which is usually a section that is different or away from the predetermined Anchor.

1. Determine and set where the anchor is on the page

1. Click on or highlight the word or sentence to be the Anchor point on the page (i.e. Pricing section of the page)
2. Click the Anchor button which looks like a flag
3. The Anchor Properties window will pop up. Type in an ANCHOR NAME (i.e. Pricing)
4. Click OK

A red flag icon will be found beside the text that was highlighted.
This is an example of an Anchor being created for the Pricing section on the same page.

2. Creating the hyperlink

This is where the steps are the same as the other 4 types of hyperlinks

First determine whether you want to create a Text Hyperlink or Image Hyperlink by following the instructions above.
1. Click on ANCHOR across the top
2. Choose Link to existing anchor with name and choose the appropriate anchor (i.e.Pricing)
3. Click SAVE & CLOSE

  • Now any time someone clicks on "Click here to see all Pricing Information” it will jump to the Pricing Anchor that was determined on that page so that they do not have to scroll on the page to look for that section.
  • Another example of anchors being used is actually on this page. If you scroll back to the top of this page, you will see the list of Topics for Hyperlinks. When you click on one of the topics, it will jump to that specific section on this page.

Target Tab - Set hyperlink to open in same window or a new window

Usually, when a hyperlink is clicked on, one of two things happen.
  1. The link that you clicked on replaces the page that you were currently on.
  2. The link that you clicked on opens up in a different tab/window.
This can easily be set up by going to the Target Tab where the linked page opens. It is available to decide whether the linked page should replace the current information or open in a new window.

By default all hyperlinks will have the Target property set to : (not set)
Target (not set) = if someone clicks on the hyperlink the page they are on will now be replaced with the link that has been created. If they close the window after they are done viewing the information on the external source, they would have closed the clubs website as well.

Usually for Internal page links, the Target remains as (not set), the reason why is because if they are still on your website, they could easily click on the back button in the browser or return to the previous page by finding it in your navigation bar.
In the end you decide whether you want the linked internal page to open up in the same or new window.

Anytime that a Web or Media Libraries Hyperlink is created it is highly recommended that the linked page be opened in a different window. That way when the user is finished looking at the linked page and accidentally closes the window, they only closed out that linked page information and not your clubs entire site.
Ideally you would like members to have your website open at all times to prevent them from accidentally closing the website. Change the Target property to New window (_blank).

To launch a linked page in a separate window

1. Click on TARGET Tab
2. Click on (not set) drop down arrow
3. Select New window (_blank) from the dropdown menu
4. Click SAVE & CLOSE

Save the changes on the page and switch from Edit mode to Preview mode to test the hyperlink.
